The 2017 olive oil vintage – small olives and big flavour!

The 2017 harvest, which started in the middle of October, was the earliest anyone can remember, thanks largely to the drought caused by ‘Lucifer’, the heatwave creating a state of emergency in 11 regions. The long, dry summer also resulted in small olives, as they contained little water.  The result are oils which have great intensity of flavour, even better appreciated when fresh. Liberty Wines, the exclusive importer of these oils, only took delivery in the first week of December 2017; rarely is there an opportunity to taste oils so soon off the press!

This superb mixed case is an excellent opportunity to sample three of Italy's finest olive oils, and would make a thoughtful present for any keen cook. If you'd prefer to focus your attention on just one variety, you can purchase cases of six here.

2017 Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Poggiotondo, Tuscany, Italy (50 cl) RRP £16.99

The Poggiotondo wine (famous for its organic Chianti) and olive estate is situated in the hills to the northwest of Empoli in western Tuscany.  The Poggiotondo estate has 2,000 olive trees planted with Frantoio and Mignola. The typical fruity flavour comes from the Frantoio variety. The low lying hills on the northern side of the Arno Valley provide one of the warmer micro-climates in Tuscany, giving oils that are fuller and richer than those from further inland but still with the characteristic pepperiness of good Tuscan oil. The estate has been certified organic since 2014.

The oil is green and elegant with an attractive spicy character. It has great purity of flavour and a fine balance.

2017 Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Fontodi, Tuscany, Italy (50 cl) RRP £21.99
Fontodi is one of the wine superstars of Chianti and their olive oil is similarly renowned (and similarly intense). Situated in the prime 'Conca d'Oro' (golden shell) of Panzano, Fontodi never struggles for sunshine and has 8,000 olive trees situated in a variety of different plots at altitudes between 400-500 metres above sea level.

Fontodi’s 2017 oil is, true to form for this famous estate, very intensely flavoured, with strong grassiness, a touch of artichoke and a peppery punch.

2017 Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Fattoria di Morello, Tuscany, Italy (75cl) RRP £22.99
The Morello estate has been making olive oil for over 200 hundred years and is now under the custodianship of the Ricceri family. Just to the north of Florence, the estate is steadfast in not making oil for others but uses their olives exclusively for their own label. The major olive variety is Moraiolo which gives a softer oil than those from Fontodi and Poggiotondo.

The oil is vivid green and fragrant, with a focus on elegant grassiness and a more understated pepperiness.
