"The furmint grape is better known as the main component of Tokaji, Hungary’s world-renowned sweet wine, but this is completely dry. Located in the famous village of Mád, it is located on the steep hillside known locally as the Old King Vineyard that was abandoned after the Second World War and returned to forest. Perhaps because of the stony volcanic soil, there is an intense minerality which gives the wine a liveliness despite the underlying plum and apple flavours.

Károly Barta is something of a pioneer in the Tokaj region for purchasing and replanting abandoned historic vineyards. He now owns around 30 acres of historic sites on the Öreg Király hill in the Mád region. He practices minimal intervention and all of his vineyards are organic with no use of herbicides or chemicals. He relies on local yeasts to preserve the characteristics of the furmint grape. This is an ideal wine to serve with food; excellent with paella, dark fish or lighter pasta dishes. "
