An eclectic mix that perfectly shows off the local character and exceptional quality that can be found in Italy today. All four of these wines are made by quality-focused, small scale producers that champion purity of fruit and finesse in their wines.
Respect for the land is core to how Rodolfo Tonnello and Francesca Rizzi run their small farm, high in the hills of the Veneto. Certified organic, the farm includes prime vineyard sites in the Valdobbiadene region, where the white Glera variety (the Prosecco grape) excels. With tiny, persistent bubbles, this is a racy, fine, fully-sparkling Prosecco style, bursting with peach and fresh lime flavours. The texture is creamy and rounded, the finish being bright and uplifting.
Kellerei Kurtatsch makes pure, elegant wines from Italy`s mountainous Alto Adige region. The 2018 vintage Pinot Bianco has all the freshness and purity one could wish for in a white wine. Colour is pale lemon-green, aromas being very attractive and scented, recalling lime and fresh apricot. The palate is light and racy, with a cleansing, silky texture and a crisp, ripe finish.
Chianti Colli Senesi, Campriano 2017 - £11.65 (was £13.25)
The 2017 vintage is a huge success for Ranuccio Neri at Campriano. Rarely do we taste a wine that has such brightness and purity - even the colour shines with a brilliant ruby hue. The aromas are ripe and beautifully fragrant, recalling freshly picked, red cherries. It is an utter joy to drink this charming wine, with its crunchy fruitiness and an open, rounded texture. The finish is perfectly judged, with gentle tannins and fresh uplift.
Lagrein produces dark, thick skinned grapes that give wines of deep colour and bright character. This 2018 is a wonderful vintage, being rich and generous, with ripe black cherry flavours and immense, meaty depth. Medium bodied, the tannins are present without being firm, bringing good structure. We recommend drinking this wine in its youth, whilst at its most vital and fresh.

Christmas is, inevitably, a time of excess, especially when it comes to food and wine. We always try to have something very special in the house. For large gatherings it is best to focus on alternatives from the big names, such as these from Private Cellar, which are not only reasonably priced but extraordinarily drinkable too.
I was particularly struck with the Bourgogne Blanc from Domaine Matrot, one of my favourite Meursault producers. As for the reds, the Château Carignan would not be out of place on any Christmas dinner table with its elegance and balance able to take on all main courses.
